Does Your Parrot Really Like You?
Let’s be honest… we’ve all wondered.
Your parrot follows you into the kitchen, screams when you leave the room, climbs onto your shoulder, and then suddenly decides you are the worst person in the world because you dared to move them.
So… does your parrot actually like you? 😂
Yes! Probably. But parrots have their own very unique way of showing it.
❤️ They Want to Be Near You
One of the biggest signs that your bird enjoys your company is simply wanting to be around you.
They may sit on your shoulder, hang out on the back of your chair, or perch nearby while you do absolutely nothing interesting.
To your parrot, though, being included in whatever you're doing can be a pretty big deal.
Sometimes they don't even want attention. They just want to know where you are.
🪶 They Groom You
Does your parrot try to preen your hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, or even your shirt?
Congratulations. You have apparently been accepted into the flock.
Parrots naturally groom members of their social group, so gentle preening can be a sign that your bird feels comfortable and connected to you.
Just remember: your bird may think your hair is in desperate need of grooming. You may disagree.
🗣️ They Call for You
Ever walk into another room and immediately hear:
“WHERE ARE YOU?!”
Okay, maybe that's not exactly what they're saying.
Parrots are social animals, and calling back and forth helps them keep track of their flock. If your bird regularly calls when you leave the room, they may simply be checking to make sure you haven't disappeared forever.
And yes, sometimes they have excellent timing.
The phone rings? They scream.
Someone is sleeping? They scream.
You finally sit down with a cup of coffee? Obviously, that's when they need you.
👀 They Watch Everything You Do
Parrots are incredibly observant.
If your bird watches you closely, learns your routines, or seems to know exactly when you're heading toward the treat cabinet, they're paying attention.
They may learn that you grab your keys before leaving, that you make coffee every morning, or that a certain drawer contains something interesting.
Your parrot may not know what you're doing…
…but they absolutely want to know what you're doing.
🥰 They Let Their Guard Down
A relaxed parrot is a comfortable parrot.
Soft, relaxed body language, relaxed feathers, hanging out comfortably on one foot, playing while you're nearby, or simply settling down for a nap around you can all be signs that your bird feels safe.
Trust doesn't always look like cuddling.
Sometimes it looks like your parrot sitting three feet away from you, happily shredding a piece of cardboard while completely ignoring you.
That's still a pretty good compliment.
🍎 And Then There's the Food…
Some parrots will try to share their food with their favorite person.
They may offer you a bite, attempt to feed you, or even bring you something they've decided is particularly special.
You might not always appreciate their choice of gift.
A soggy piece of pellet?
A half-eaten vegetable?
A mysterious object they found under the couch?
It's the thought that counts.
🙃 But What About the Biting?
Here's the funny thing about parrots:
A bird can love you and still bite you.
Being bonded to your bird doesn't mean they'll always want to be touched, picked up, or bothered.
Just like people, parrots have moods.
Sometimes they want head scratches.
Sometimes they want to sit on your shoulder.
Sometimes they want to be left completely alone.
Learning to recognize those moments—and respecting them—is one of the best ways to build trust with your bird.
So… Does Your Parrot Like You?
If your bird chooses to spend time with you, seeks you out, relaxes around you, communicates with you, plays near you, or simply seems happy to have you nearby…
There's a pretty good chance you've made it into the flock. ❤️
And if they occasionally scream at you, ignore you, steal your food, or bite you because you touched the wrong feather?
Well…
That's just part of living with a parrot. 😂
They may not always make it easy, but when a parrot chooses to trust you, it's pretty special.
